International Course in Disaster Risk Reduction at the Local Level

HOW TO REGISTER

The second edition of the course will take place at UPEACE Headquarters, in San Jose, Costa Rica, from February 18 to March 10, 2009

The registration process for external participants is now open. The deadline for presenting applications is January 16, 2009.

The deadline for the tuition payment for students who do not benefit from a UPEACE scholarship is January 30, 2009.

Registration requirements

For graduate credit:

  • Scanned or fax copy of their university degree (BA or equivalent).
  • English Proficiency: Participants whose native language is not English are required to demonstrate their English proficiency. Participants who submit a score of 600 or higher in the paper version of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (PBT); 250 in the computer version (CBT) or 100 in the Internet based version (IBT) will be considered to have the necessary English level to participate in Master's courses. (UPEACE TOEFL Code 7180). IELTS scores from the British Council and other recognized English language proficiency tests are also accepted. The minimum score for IELTS test is a band score of 8; Very Good User. Participants who graduated from an English language-speaking high school shall submit their high school diploma as proof. Participants who graduated from an English language speaking higher education institution with a Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral degree, are eligible for a waiver from the TOEFL.
  • Curriculum Vitae that demonstrates the applicant's relevant experience in the field of disaster risk reduction or human health resilience;
  • A convincing statement of purpose about their objectives in taking that course.

For Training purposes or other:

Course tuition

Course tuition includes teaching and class material, as well as transport on field trips and access to the students’ services on campus. It does not include any other expenses, like: travel, visa, housing or perdiem.

  • For graduate credit: 3 credit course$2,000
  • Training purposes or other: 3 week course $1,200

UPEACE may have available a few scholarships for practitioners, who are nationals from the Central American or Caribbean regions to attend this course. The scholarships include:

  • Travel to and from the country of residence (Central America or Caribbean);
  • Housing in Ciudad Colon;
  • Living allowance;
  • Course tuition and materials.
